The first one froze nupple cracked stock in 2 places so I bought a 2nd one this one is a shooter. Managed groups under 2 inches at 50 yards using a .58 maxi from track of the wolf 100 grains Goex 2F felted over powder.For just the lock, I haven't found detailed instructions anywhere. Most of it seems pretty straightforward, except for the serpentine. Got this result with a slight variation of the Skychief load today. I used 4 overshot cards in place of the nitro card. You're right in saying that you will have to experiment with your gun to find out for sure. Most of my .54's do fine for deer with .530 roundball in .015 patch over 80 grains of 3f Swiss. However, I do have one .54 that prefers a 425 grain Great Plains bullet and 100 grains of 2f.That bullet had a Muzzle Velocity of 1058 and 1407 ft/lb of energy. A patched .570 diameter roundball with an 80 grain load of GOEX 2Fg had a breech pressure of 5,200 psi and a muzzle velocity of 1288. In my opinion, for a Production gun, the Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken is the "best" one out there, and perhaps the only true production replica out there. Going to split it up and try adding iron from different sources and see how it work out. My intention is to have one batch with wrought Iron added, another with some 1095 steel I have, and the last batch be a basic acid/water mix.Corn meal - At our last muzzle loading trap shoot one said he was using corn meal instead of cushion wads. I pulled the nipple and clean out screw and pushed the ball closer to the breech. There was no powder under it so I dribbled in about 20 grains of 3f and replaced the screw and nipple. It tends to shatter like glass. While flint, agate, etc are 7 on Moh's hardness scale, obsidian is only 5. BTW stainless steel is also around 5 on the same scale. A good frizzen may actually be harder than obsidian. Anther fella on a different board described a minor modification to the loading lever latch that solved the problem. The open sights would not stay in focus so I removed the rear sight and installed a Skinner Sights lo pro peep in the screw hole by the hammer.I did a sort of "halfway house" by milling the slots, but then cutting the dovetails with a three square file with one face ground off..
